Since its launch in 1993, the Nissan Altima has become one of the company's most popular models. The four-door sedan was completely redesigned in 2019, and won great reviews for its mix of features, comfort, and versatility.
The latest 2020 version of the Altima is now on sale, but what do you get for the highly affordable starting price of $28,098?
Exterior and Styling
The Altima is an excellent example of an attractive family sedan, providing modern sleek looks without losing any of its practicality. Importantly, the swept-back curves don't impact on interior spaciousness, with the roomy cabin seating five with ease and the cavernous trunk providing 436L of cargo space.
Powertrain Options and Performance
The standard 2020 Altima powertrain is based around a 2.5L four-cylinder engine with an output of 188 horsepower and 180lb-ft of torque. This is paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and front-wheel drive as standard, with all-wheel drive available across the entire range.
Those looking for a little extra oomph can upgrade to the optional 2.0L turbo engine pushing out 248 horsepower and 273lb-ft, plenty enough power for a car of this size and class.
Fuel Economy
The standard powertrain configuration has excellent fuel economy figures of 8.4L / 100km for city driving and 6L / 100km on the highway. Adding all-wheel drive has a slight negative impact on economy, as you'd expect, but the figures of 9/6.5L are still more than acceptable.
However, the real surprise is the fuel economy of the turbo engine. Considering the hefty output it provides, the figures of 9.4L / 100km for city driving and 6.9L / 100km on the highway are very good indeed.
Safety Features
The 2020 Altima is supplied with a solid range of active and passive safety features as standard. Highlights include:
- Forward collision detection.
- Automatic emergency braking, rated 'Superior' by the IIHS.
- Driver alertness assist.
However, adding the optional Safety Shield 360 package adds a slew of new features, including pedestrian detection, lane departure warnings, rear automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alerts.
Also available is Nissan's ProPilot assist system, which brings semi-autonomous driving technology to the Altima. Offering automatic control of acceleration, braking, and steering when driving in a single lane, the technology reduces the workload of the driver while introducing significant safety improvements.
Interior Technology
As is usual with Nissan, the Altima provides a great set of technology features as standard. Highlights include the 8" touchscreen powering the infotainment system equipped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Bluetooth connectivity is standard, with two USB-A and two USB-C ports included for added convenience.
The standard audio system has six speakers to play the satellite radio, AM/FM, and MP3, with higher trims upgrading this to a Bose nine-speaker system.
