2020 Nissan Leaf: Features, Performance & Price in Calgary

The Nissan Leaf is billed as the world's most affordable electric vehicle, bringing EV technology to the mainstream family market. Now into its second generation with a substantial redesign, does the 2020 version live up to its promise?

First Impressions

The appearances of the 2020 Nissan Leaf grab you from the start. With its v-shaped grill, floating roof design, and sleekly swept-back lines, it's a stylish compact hatchback that stands out on the highway and driveway alike.

All-Electric Powertrain

The entry-level Leaf is powered by a 40kWh battery and a 110kW electric motor, generating 147 horsepower and 236lb-ft of torque. However, the Plus versions of the Leaf are much more impressive, upgrading the battery to a more powerful 62-kWh design and the motor to 160kW, boosting the output to 214 horsepower with 250lb-ft of torque.

Perhaps more importantly, the bigger battery extends the range considerably, moving from a slightly miserly 243km to a much more generous 363km.

As is usual for an electric vehicle, the transmission is a single-speed direct automatic design, powering front-wheel drive only.

All of this results in excellent fuel economy figures, with the rated equivalent of just 2.0L / 100km for city and highway combined. Match this figure with the newly extended range, and the Leaf is at the forefront of making all-electric cars a highly realistic proposition for everyday driving.

Interior Technology

The advanced technology doesn't end with the powertrain. Inside the cabin there's a wide range of tech and comfort features installed as standard, including:

- 8" touchscreen for infotainment.

- 7" digital gauge cluster display for essential driving information.

- Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

- Automatic climate control plus heated front and rear seats.

- 6-speaker stereo with MP3 and satellite radio capability.

Higher trims add such comforts as leather seating and a Bose 7-speaker audio system, but the entire range is well equipped from the ground up.

Safety Systems

Perhaps the most impressive safety feature of the 2020 Leaf is the inclusion of the Safety Shield 360 suite as standard. This package adds many powerful active features, including:

- Blind-spot warnings.

- Rear cross-traffic alerts.

- Lane departure warnings.

- Forward collision warning.

- Automatic front emergency braking with pedestrian detection.

- Rear obstacle detection and emergency braking.

- Automatic high-beam headlights.

For 2020, the Leaf also includes Nissan's ProPilot Assist system which takes some of the safety burden off the driver, with semi-autonomous steering, braking, and acceleration under typical highway conditions.

2020 Nissan Leaf Pricing in Canada

The pricing of the 2020 Nissan Leaf helps bring all-electric power into easier reach, with the Canadian MSRP starting at $44,298 and rising to $52,898 for the top-end model. At first glance this may seem a high price for a hatchback, but considering the advanced electric technology underlying the engineering, it's much more affordable than most rivals.
