Hyundai introduced its first-ever midsize truck in 2022, named the Santa Cruz. At the same time, Nissan released a complete revamp of the Frontier. These two trucks are direct contenders in the midsize pickup trucks segment, each with unique and well-appointed features and characteristics that may apply to different buyers’ driving habits and needs.Â

The Frontier is available in 12 trims, and you can choose between the King Cab and Crew Cab configurations and 4x2 or 4x4 drivetrains. Starting at $28,680, the 4x2 2022 Nissan Frontier King Cab S makes an entrance with a highly reasonable price tag. The larger 4x2 Crew Cab S has a starting price of $29,990, and the 4x2 King Cab SV starts at $31,390. The 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz doesn’t offer buyers a large selection of trim levels. The Santa Cruz is available in only two trims: Preferred and Ultimate. Starting prices range from $41,454 to $47,754.Â
Engines and Performance
The Nissan comes equipped with a 3.8-litre 24-valve engine capable of accelerating from zero to 100km/h in 7.8 seconds. The engine produces 310 horsepower and 281 of torque maximum power. You can expect to get 7.6km/L in the city, 10.2km/L on the highway, and 8.5km/L combined driving your truck under usual driving conditions. The Frontier is also capable of towing considerable loads for its size. The truck can haul a maximum weight of 6,720 pounds and carry a maximum payload of 1,600 pounds.
The Santa Cruz comes standard with a 2.5-litre turbocharged engine. You can look forward to getting 12.1km/L in the city, 8.6km/L driving on the highway, and 10.6km/L combined. The truck can tow a top load of 5,000 pounds and carry a maximum weight of 1,753 pounds. The turbo engine can kick out 191 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque.Â
